| Description: Cantaloupes are of European origin, specifically Rome. Make no mistake, these melons are not imported from Rome as the North American cantaloupe is actually a type of muskmelon. It has freckled skin with a sweet and orange flesh. Their season runs from about the end of May through November. You can tell a vine-ripened cantaloupe, all melons for that matter, by its sweet and slightly tart and acidic taste. Which by-the-way is a perfect combination...the sweet and the bitter. Avoid over-ripe melons with soft spots. They keep well in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
